Last week, GNet Group hosted a technical event that focused on Data Visualization with SQL Server 2012. This event was the first event in an ongoing series that GNet Group will be hosting. Anyone is invited to attend and explore Microsoft Technologies, specifically the Business Intelligence with SQL Server and SharePoint, during this series of technical events.
During the event, we analyzed and addressed the question; “Why Data Visualization?” Key discussion points to support data visualization were:
- Visual representation of data
- Easy to understand trends in data
- East to spot challenges with data and trends that do not confirm to the norm/expectations
- Gain insights into data
- Quick and informed decision making
- Analyze millions of rows of data quickly – rapid prototyping
- Familiar tools
- Visual design experience
- Empower self-service analytics
Since this was an interactive, in-person event, the emphasis was on collaborative discussions, rather than a presentation.
We also looked at the effectiveness of data visualization by utilizing tools like PowerPivot and PowerView. The screenshots below are samples of the data visualization examples that were created during the deep dive sessions of the event.
We took some sample data for NBA matches and specifically looked at analyzing the performance of the Dallas Mavericks having the home court advantage. The reports and data visualizations were some samples of options that we had for analyzing data related to the matches for the past 3 seasons that the Dallas Mavericks played.
Note: The data in the screenshots is for demo purposes only. This data was obtained from the internet and so we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the data. The focus of the event was to showcase the power of data visualization.
